How to Choose a Wedding Officiant

You have chosen your wedding date, place and time, but now it is time to select the individual who will perform your ceremony-- a Wedding Officiant. Here are some tips to keep in mind in selecting someone who is compatible with your needs and wishes:

  • Is the Officiant willing to speak with you in an interview situation, so you may ask questions regarding their skills, experience and philosophy?

  • Can the Officiant provide you with references?

  • Are you more comfortable with a male or female Officiant? Is this important to you?

  • How much interaction do you want to have with the Officiant in planning your ceremony? Will they make themselves available to you with any questions or concerns you might have?

  • Is the Officiant comfortable with accomodating your religious/spiritual values and beliefs?

  • Consider the Officiant’s personality—do you want someone who is warm and friendly or would you prefer someone who is more formal and restrained?

  • Is the Officiant willing and able to travel to your location, and if so, are there travel expenses involved?

In the end, like your choice of a life partner, it comes down to your sense of comfort with this individual and the degree of interaction you want and need. Trust your judgment—most of us are able to get a good “feel” for person as to whether they are a good fit for us and our situation. Last of all, the Officiant should be comfortable with your choices and preferences.
